Carnival arrives to LLoret de Mar from March the 1st to the 3rd with costume competitions and a Carnival parade.
One of the funniest moments of the year in Lloret de Mar is Carnival. Everyone goes out to join the parade: children dress up with their favourite characters costumes and the eldest prepare choreographies with cheerful music that encourage everybody!

There’s no doubt, one of the most famous attractions in Lloret de Mar during Carnival is the spectacular Carnival parade.
The Carnival parade is a great show of costumes and float parades, where people of all ages get together to compete against each other to gain the best position. The competition’s jury evaluates the originality of its dances, the costumes and the creativity with which each float has been worked out...
The float parade is the transport that accompanies each group during the parade. Those floats are decorated according to the style and theme its members have chosen. They are also the responsibles to play the music during the whole choreographies.
The main charm of this parade is that it takes place in three different towns: Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Tossa de Mar. This is why the parade takes the name of "Carnival of the Costa Brava South" and it’s on during three days.
The street parade usually begins in Lloret de Mar on Saturday afternoon, it also takes place on Sunday morning. This same day but during the afternoon, you can also enjoy the parade in Blanes. The Carnival ends the 16th in Tossa de Mar.

Typical Carnival Cuisine: pork crackling cake!
One of the most popular meals in Catalonia and throughout Spain during Carnival is the “Coca de Llardons” (pork crackling pastry cake). If you had never heard about it, it’s very sweet. If you like to try traditional products when you visit a country... you cannot miss it!
This crackling cake is made with eggs, flour, sugar, lard and pine nuts. The fact of including an ingredient such as lard (which comes from pork) is what makes this popular recipe famous.
The explanation of using the pork crackling is due, precisely, to the moment it is eaten: during Lent, which was formerly held on Thursday before Carnival.
It is said that at this time families were getting eggs and meat, as they were about to begin the absence of these foods for seven weeks, as evidenced by the Catholic religion.
After this period, it is said that on the Thursday before Carnival it was the first day that people could delight, savour and re-eat all those foods that had been banned during all that time. And from there they began to celebrate it with a delicious “Coca de Llardons” :)
