The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà are one of the most important wetlands in Catalonia, together with the Ebro Delta and the Llobregat Delta, and a true paradise for nature lovers on the Costa Brava. Located between the mouths of the Fluvià and Muga rivers, this natural area features lagoons, marshes and canals that support a remarkable biodiversity. In this article, we explain why it is an essential visit.
The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park is one of the most outstanding natural areas on the Costa Brava. Located in the Alt Empordà plain, between the towns of Sant Pere Pescador and the beach of Empuriabrava, this protected area covers around 4,722 hectares, of which 824 hectares form part of a strictly protected nature reserve.
The park owes its origin to the action of the Muga, Fluvià, Ter and Daró rivers, which have shaped this landscape of wetlands, marshes, ponds and lagoons. In the past, these wetlands covered much of the coastline of the Gulf of Roses and the Baix Ter area, but they gradually declined due to the expansion of agriculture and livestock farming, as well as the construction of reservoirs.
In addition, the park has an extensive network of irrigation channels that help regulate water and support ecosystem conservation. It also offers easy routes for walking or cycling, as well as viewpoints from which to observe wildlife and the landscape.

The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà stand out for their great diversity of habitats. This area includes coastal dune systems, hypersaline and brackish lagoons, wet meadows (“closes”), fluctuating freshwater bodies, rivers, streams and canals, as well as lakes and freshwater areas. There are also cultivated zones such as fields, irrigated land and rice paddies.
This wide variety of environments, shaped by salinity, wind and the variations in water levels, has encouraged the development of highly specialized flora adapted to constant change.
This diversity of ecosystems explains its extraordinary biological richness, especially in birdlife. Up to 329 bird species have been recorded, of which 82 regularly nest in the park. Notable species include the stork, flamingo, purple swamphen, Kentish plover, kingfisher and kestrel.
Overall, more than 50 species of fish, 9 amphibians, 16 native reptiles and around 30 species of terrestrial mammals have been observed.
For wildlife observation, the park features several hides or “aguaits” that allow visitors to observe nature without disturbing it.
The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park offers a network of routes that allow visitors to explore its diverse landscapes. Most routes are suitable for all ages, with short trails ideal for walking and family outings, as well as longer options for cycling.
One of the main access points is El Cortalet, a former farmhouse converted into the park’s information and interpretation centre. From here, several routes begin and visitors can access services such as parking, picnic areas and rest zones.
Another highlight is Mas del Matà, next to the Senillosa Observatory, a viewpoint located in a former rice-drying tower offering outstanding views of the surroundings.
Among the best-known walking routes are the path from El Cortalet to Mas del Matà (4.5 km), the Estany de Vilaüt route and the Fluvià River itinerary. For cycling enthusiasts, the Ruta dels Estanys (26.8 km) and the cycle route through Castelló d’Empúries and Vilanova de la Muga are particularly recommended.
Before your visit, it is advisable to check the park map and download the routes to choose the one that best suits your time and fitness level.

To make the most of your visit to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, it is advisable to plan ahead, check the weather forecast and review the route map. It is also recommended to avoid the hottest hours in summer and opt for early morning or late afternoon, which are the best times for wildlife observation.
In the case of group visits, it is advisable to contact the park in advance to organize the experience.
This is an exposed natural environment, so it is important to wear comfortable clothing, suitable footwear, bring enough water and use mosquito repellent. Binoculars are also recommended, especially for birdwatching.
During your visit, it is essential to follow signage and stay on marked paths. The park combines natural areas with agricultural and private land, so it is important to respect crops, livestock and local activity. Lighting fires, camping or collecting plants and animals is not allowed.
To help preserve the environment, it is recommended to reduce waste, use bins or take your rubbish with you, and avoid making noise that could disturb wildlife. Discretion is key to enjoying the park without affecting its natural balance.
Dogs must always be kept on a leash, and vehicle access is limited to designated parking areas. In some routes, cycling is also restricted, so it is important to check the conditions beforehand.
