Charming villages in the interior of Girona

Charming villages in the interior of Girona

10.08.2023 Culture

From the mountains of the Pyrenees to the rugged and idyllic Costa Brava, the province of Girona has all kinds of landscapes. Inside there are towns that seem to be taken from a fairy tale. Discover some of these charming towns in the interior of the province of Girona!

Monells

The town of Monells is located in the Baix Empordà region, in the beautiful natural setting of Les Gavarres. This small medieval town, located very close to Peratallada and Pals, is only half an hour by road from Girona and can be visited in just a few hours.

Some of the essential places to visit in Monells are the photogenic Carrer del Arcs, where you can see the influence of Gothic architecture with several slender stone arches; the Plaça del Oli, which stands out for its arcades and vines that contrast with the yellowish color of the stone; and the iconic Plaça de Jaume I, surrounded by beautiful stone buildings with arcades and where several scenes of the film Ocho Apellidos Catalanes were filmed.

Not far away are other small towns that are worth visiting, such as Cruïlles, Corçà or Madremanya.

Santa Pau

Surrounded by the volcanoes of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa is the town of Santa Pau. They are the birthplace of the well-known fesols de Santa Pau, small round white beans that have a very mild flavor that makes them unique.

At the top of a small hill, the town preserves its walled medieval historic center, with a porticoed Plaça Major with an irregular profile and unequal arches and the Castell dels Barons de Santa Pau, a square building dating from 1147.

Other places that you cannot miss near Santa Pau are the Fageda d'en Jordà, the Croscat volcano or the Santa Margarita volcano.

Castellfollit de la Roca

Castellfollit de la Roca is one of the smallest municipalities in Spain, with less than 1 km² in area. It is located in an almost impossible location, on top of a spectacular basaltic cliff 50 meters high and almost a kilometer long, made up of lava from two superimposed flows.

The buildings in this town in the region of La Garrotxa are basically built with volcanic material. The narrow streets of the town end at the old church of Sant Salvador, at the end of the cliff, where there is a viewpoint with privileged views.

From the footbridge over the Fluvià river, unique views of Castellfollit de la Roca and the spectacular cliff of volcanic origin of the town with its two lava flows from Olot and Begudà are achieved.

Beget

It is not an exaggeration to say that this small mountain town is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Catalonia. Beget is located in the Ripollès region, between Alta Garrotxa and the first slopes of the Pyrenees.

It is a Pyrenean Romanesque town located at 540 meters above sea level, in the middle of holm oak, oak and beech forests. Its population center is made up of three sectors, separated by two streams and connected by stone bridges. The architectural ensemble of Beget is made up of medieval houses, narrow streets and several Romanesque monuments, among which the Romanesque church of San Cristóbal stands out.

Take the opportunity to go on an excursion, a hiking route or take a bath in the Beget pools, three large and refreshing pools located on the outskirts, in the Salarsa stream.

Ullastret

The town of Ullastret is located in the Baix Empordà region, on a hill on the right bank of the Daró river.

The medieval walls and ten imposing towers are preserved in very good condition. The historic center of the town is made up of narrow and steep stone streets, among which the parish church of San Pedro, dating from the end of the 9th century, and the Gothic market stand out.

The Iberian city of Ullastret, on Puig de Sant Andreu, is a must. It is the largest Iberian settlement discovered so far in Catalonia, inhabited since the 6th century BC. until the beginning of the 2nd century BC, when it was abandoned with the arrival of the Romans.

Camprodon

In the center of the Camprodon valley, where the Ter and Ritort rivers meet, is the town of Camprodon. This town in the Ripollès region experienced strong growth at the end of the s. XIX, when the Catalan bourgeoisie began to spend the summer.

Without a doubt, the most iconic place in Camprodon is the Pont Nou. This stone bridge with a single arch and a double slope was built over the River Ter in the 12th century, allowing access to the population and forming part of the road that led to La Cerdanya.

Nor can you miss visiting the old town, where the Plaça de la Vila is located; the church of Santa María, in the Gothic style built in the 14th century, or the Monastery of Sant Pere, considered one of the most important Romanesque monuments in the area.

Queralbs

The municipality of Queralbs, in the Ripollès region, is located in the Ribes valley. It was built on the rock of the mountains and can only be reached by overcoming a steep slope. The best way to do it is with one of the few rack railways in the country, which connects Ribes de Freser and Núria.

Queralbs has an important Romanesque legacy, known for the stone of the houses and the characteristic slate of the roofs. Among its buildings, the Romanesque church of Sant Jaume stands out, with one of the best porches with arches in all of Catalonia.

It is an ideal place to practice all kinds of mountain activities and sports, such as alpine or mountain skiing (in the Vall de Núria station), climbing (in the Totlomón rocks or in the Roc del Dui), mountaineering, speleology (in the Coves de les Encantades or in the Forat de l'Embut), horseback riding or cycling.
