The most spectacular views of the Costa Brava

The most spectacular views of the Costa Brava

04.05.2023 Nature

The Costa Brava has one of the most incredible coastlines in the world, a rocky and rugged coastline that offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. In this post you will discover some corners of the Costa Brava that will leave you breathless. Get ready to marvel at the natural beauty of this Catalan region!

Castle of Sant Joan, Blanes

One of the best views of the Costa Brava is in the town of Blanes, specifically in the Sant Joan Castle, also known as Forcadell Castle, located on top of a hill with the same name. This walled enclosure is the ideal place to watch the sunset near the sea.

You get a panoramic view of the Blanes coastline from more than 170 meters high. You can see the entire municipal area of the city, the emblematic rock of Sa Palomera (the place where the Costa Brava ends and the Maresme coast begins) and, on days when the sky is clear, you can also see the mountains of Les Gavarres, the coastal mountain range or the Montseny.

Access to the castle is easy since it can be reached by car on a paved road. It is located about 2 kilometres from the Blanes beach and the town centre, so it can also be reached on foot, walking for about half an hour. The space is open from 8am to 9pm from October to March and from 8am to 11pm from April to September.

Cap de Creus lighthouse, Cadaqués

Cap de Creus is one of the most spectacular places on the entire Catalan coast. At the easternmost end of this natural park is the Cap de Creus Lighthouse, a site that we recommend visiting at least once in your life, although we must warn you about the north wind.

It is located at an altitude of more than 80 meters, on a steep and mountainous peninsula full of cliffs. From there you can get spectacular views of the Costa Brava and the small coves that form its coastline.

The lighthouse is located about 6 kilometres from the town of Cadaqués, so the best way to get there is by car along its narrow winding road. Right next door is a local gastronomy restaurant, perfect for a bite to eat after enjoying the sunset.

Begur Castle, Begur

Begur Castle is one of the main attractions in the area and a true symbol of the Empordà town of Begur. This castle of medieval origin is located on a hill that strategically dominates the entire municipality.

This location offers excellent views of the Costa Brava and the Begur coastline. On a clear, cloudless day, you can also see the Medes Islands, the Empordà plain, Cap de Creus and Golf de Roses.

The easiest way to get there is on foot from the centre of the town, walking for less than half an hour, although it can also be accessed by car to the car park next to the castle.

Montgrí Castle, Torroella de Montgrí

Another of the places on the Costa Brava whose views you cannot miss is the Montgrí Castle, located in the town of Torroella de Montgrí. It is located on top of the Massif del Montgrí, a bare and rounded mountain 315 meters high.

It is located just 6 kilometres from the sea and is visible from many points in the Empordà. From this place you get spectacular panoramic views of the Costa Brava, the Medes Islands, the Golf de Roses, the Cap de Creus. You can also see the Empordà plain, the neighbouring towns, the mouth of the Ter and even the Canigó, located in the Pyrenees.

The only way to go up to the castle is on foot, although the route is not difficult. It is located about 2.5 kilometres from the centre of Torroella de Montgrí, so it can be reached on foot in about half an hour.

Girona wall, Girona

The Girona wall is the best viewpoint of the city. It is a defensive Carolingian sandstone construction located in the centre of the city of Girona and through which you can walk.

The wall has four access points and several towers with panoramic views of the city, from where you can get some of the best views of the Girona cathedral, the church of Sant Fèlix, and the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligans. And on days when the sky is clear, you can also see the mountains of the Pyrenees and Les Guilleries.

The walls are free to enter, although the hours are restricted, and they are closed at night. Our recommendation is to visit them during sunset. The journey from end to end of the wall takes approximately one hour, but you can leave the tour at any of the four access points.

Walled enclosure of the Vila Vella, Tossa de Mar

The walled enclosure of the Vila Vella is one of the most emblematic places on the Costa Brava. It is located in the old town of Tossa de Mar, at the foot of the northwest slope of the promontory that faces Cape Tossa.

In addition to occupying an incredibly large space with a perimeter of about 300 metres, the wall also has three large cylindrical towers (the Es Codolar or the Homage tower, the Ses Hores or Clock tower and the Joanàs tower) from the that you get some privileged views of the bay of Tossa and the beach of Es Codolar.

Access to the walled enclosure of the Vila Vella in Tossa de Mar is done on foot and is very easy, you just have to climb the small slope of cobbled streets located at the foot of the large beach of Tossa de Mar.
