The Santa Clotilde Gardens in Lloret de Mar have been chosen as the setting for House of the Dragon, the prequel to the popular HBO series Game of Thrones. The new series, which premiered on August 21 on HBO Max, is based on the novel Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin, which confronts members of the Targaryen house two hundred years before the events related in Game of Thrones.
The members of The House of the Dragon (as the series is known in english) was filming in the Santa Clotilde Gardens last year, from October 29 to November 10, 2021. The team of 250 people was distributed in two installed bases, one in Cala Sa Boadella pine forest, for medium-tonnage trucks, and another in the bus terminal Transports Pujol, which accommodated 15 caravans and 10 heavy-duty vehicles.
The film production company Fresco Films chose the gardens of Lloret de Mar for the renaissance style and for the panoramic views over the Mediterranean. The area is easily recognizable in the series, as it appears as it really is, without any attretzo or decorations. Spoiler alert! They can be seen in the second chapter of the series, entitled "The Rogue Prince", when Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys propose Viserys I Targaryen, king of the Seven Kingdoms, to join their valyrian houses through the marriage with his daughter Lady Laena Velaryon.
In addition to Lloret de Mar, other Spanish locations such as the towns of Cáceres and Trujillo, in Extremadura, and La Calahorra, in Andalusia, have been chosen to give life to the scenes of the House of the Dragon series. The producers of Game of Thrones already chose the province of Girona for the city of Girona to give life to one of the locations of the sixth season, the city of "Braavos".
The Santa Clotilde Gardens are considered one of the best Mediterranean botanical gardens in Europe. The gardens with more than 25,000 m2, were designed in 1919 by the architect Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí following the Italian Renaissance model, present in the superimposed terraces, the paths, the ramps, the stairs, the sculptures, the fountains, and the ponds of the Botanical Garden.
