The Gardens of Santa Clotilde in Lloret de Mar are considered one of the best Mediterranean botanical gardens in Europe. They were designed in 1919 by the architect Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí, a great follower of the French landscape architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, designer of the Montjuïc Gardens and the Ciutadella Park in Barcelona.
Marquis of Roviralta, a lover of the romantic Italian gardens of the Renaissance era, decided to commission the construction of these gardens so that he could enjoy their personal use. The land that the gardens currently occupy was dedicated to planting vineyards and the marquis acquired them until reaching its current area of more than 25,000 m2.
These gardens are named Clotilde in honor of the first wife of the Marquis of Roviralta, Clotilde Rocamora. Work on the gardens was paralyzed in 1927 due to the death of the young Clotilde and was resumed two years later when the marquis met his second wife. Construction ended after the Spanish Civil War and the gardens belonged to the Roviralta family until 1997, when the City Council acquired them and renovated them to become municipal heritage.
Thanks to their stunning beauty, the Santa Clotilde Gardens have gained great popularity in recent years, becoming a featured setting in the House of the Dragon series, the prequel to the famous Game of Thrones series.
The gardens follow the Italian Renaissance model, structured with a staggered terrace, Mediterranean plant species and small ponds and sculptural groups. To overcome the unevenness of the cliffs, the architect decided to use stairs and ramps. Between steps he chose to plant ivy, which if viewed from below looks like a vegetal waterfall. Its vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean basin: pines, lime trees, alberos, pittosporos and cypresses. The gardens have sculptures of mythological characters such as Venus and the mermaids, which emulate Roman sculpture from the imperial era.
Near the main entrance is the original house, which stands out for the semi-circular arches on the ground floor, a large terrace and a three-story tower. The gardens are organized around the main staircase, known as the Mermaid Stairs. When descending through it, the smells of resins, laurels and aromatic plants mix with that of the sea in the background.
Santa Clotilde Gardens are located on Passeig Jardins s/n in Lloret de Mar, in the province of Girona. They are located on a cliff between Fenals beach and Sa Boadella beach, so they boast spectacular views of the Costa Brava and the Mediterranean Sea.
