Can Font, the only indiano-style house-museum in Catalonia

Can Font, the only indiano-style house-museum in Catalonia

23.11.2023 Culture Activities in Lloret

Can Font, also known as Cal Conde or Can Piuet, is a modernist-style building located at Carrer de Sant Carles, 16, in Lloret de Mar. It was built in 1877 by the Lloret native Fèlix Torras i Mataró, commissioned by Nicolau Font i Maig.

In 1940, Nicolau Cabañas i Llovet, the son of a nephew of Nicolau Font i Maig, sold the manor house to Ferran Comadran i Torres, a Sabadell textile industrialist and summer home. Later, in 1981, Lloret de Mar Town Council acquired the property as a prototype of a series of manor houses linked to the Lloret fortunes made in the Americas.

It forms part of the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia and is currently the only public house-museum in the indiano style still preserved in Catalonia.

The building

Can Font is an architectural masterpiece that reflects the richness of the period in which it was built. At the top of the central part is an anagram with the letters N and F, the initials of Nicolau Font i Maig, the first owner of Can Font.

This neoclassical building consists of a basement, a ground floor, two floors and an attic. Its layout is organised around a central staircase that links the different rooms on each floor.

The rhomboidal shape of the land on which the house sits is evident in all its rooms, with the staircase being the highlight, with a large central eye and abundant natural light.

Although nowadays Lloret de Mar has buildings several storeys high, in its day Can Font was the tallest house in the town.

The interiors

The beauty of Can Font does not stop at its structure, but goes deep into the interior, where every corner is adorned with amazing handcrafted details: sgraffito, frescoes and plaster on ceilings and walls; floor and ceramic mosaics, artistic ironwork on railings, wood and leaded glass in stained-glass windows. A spectacular ensemble in a unifying modernist style.

Among its most outstanding elements are the stairwell with mahogany bars, the vestibule and entrance hall, the polychrome mosaic floors and the bathroom tiled with modernist motifs.

Nicolau Font i Maig

Son of Nicolau Font i Brugada and Rosa Maig i Vilallonga, Nicolau Font i Maig was born in 1830 in the Catalan town of Lloret de Mar. In the early 1850s he settled in Cuba to help manage the business of his uncle Josep Mayo y Villalonga, who had emigrated to seek a better economic situation and was involved in maritime trade, sugar plantations and the textile trade. Nicolau Font i Maig managed to considerably increase his uncle's fortune, which he inherited when he died.

In 1860, while he was still living in Cuba, he acquired the hermitage and the site of Sant Pere del Bosc, which had been confiscated during the reign of Isabel II. His cousin and mayor of the town of Lloret de Mar, Agustí Font i Surís, advised him to buy it to prevent it from falling into the hands of outsiders. At that time, the restoration and beautification of the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Gràcia and the whole area of Sant Pere del Bosc was promoted, culminating in 1898 with a large-scale event.

Nicolau Font i Maig returned as a truly wealthy indiano and, in 1877, he commissioned the master builder Fèlix Torras i Mataró to build Can Font, which was to be his house and that of the next generations of his family.

Nicolau Font i Maig died in 1908 in the town of Lloret de Mar, having been a benefactor of the Hospital, the Parish Schools and a contributor to various charitable causes. He was known as "Conde del Jaruco" (Count of Jaruco) despite not having the official title of Count due to his popular generosity. During his time in Cuba he helped many families in need. Cuban society suggested that he be rewarded by the king with the noble title of count, but Nicolau used the money to continue helping families in need.
