The Fires de Sant Narcís arrive in Girona from 23 October to 1 November! As every year, the city will be filled with colour and joy with parades, giants, human towers, concerts and activities for the whole family, with a programme packed with events, music and entertainment. It is said that Sant Narcís was born in the city of Girona (which at that time was known as “Gerunda”). After becoming a preacher, he and his deacon Felix travelled to the Alpine region and Germany, and he settled in Augsburg (Germany), a city of which he is also the patron saint. In the 4th century, when he returned to Girona, Sant Narcís was martyred together with his deacon and many other followers in the same place where the church of Sant Feliu was later built.
He is known for the miracle of the flies. According to the legend of Sant Narcís, in 1285, the French troops of King Philip III, who were besieging Girona, managed to enter the city. At Sant Feliu, they desecrated the tomb of Sant Narcís and thousands of flies emerged from it to attack the French soldiers. The bites of the flies killed 4,000 horses and 20,000 soldiers and drove away the remaining troops, saving the city from foreign rule.
Thanks to this, Sant Narcís is represented surrounded by flies, and these insects became an icon representing the city of Girona. This episode gave rise to the sayings “Per Sant Narcís, cada mosca val per sis” (On Sant Narcís, every fly is worth six) and “Les mosques, per Sant Narcís, a cada picada en maten sis” (On Sant Narcís, flies kill six with every bite).
The events of the Fires de Sant Narcís will begin on 23 October at 17:30 with parades at different points throughout the city. At 20:00, the festivities' opening speech will take place in Plaça del Vi, followed by the Pluja de Capgrossos at 20:30. At 22:00, at La Copa, the opening show “Un somni a Fires” will take place, featuring 300 drones flying over some of the symbols, spaces and traditions of the festivities.
On Sunday 25 October at 11:30, a Catalan human tower performance (castellers) will take place in Plaça del Vi. And on Saturday 31 October, at 19:30, the traditional Pujada del Pilar de 4 on the steps of the Cathedral will take place.
You can also enjoy sardanes during the festivities, with performances such as those on Saturday 24 October at 11:30 at Passeig de Francina Boris; Wednesday 28 October at 18:00 in Plaça del Vi; Thursday 29 October at 17:00 in Plaça del Vi; and Sunday 1 November at 11:00 in Plaça de Francesc Calvet i Rubalcaba, as well as other activities related to popular culture.
During these days, all kinds of games, activities, shows and children's and family concerts will take place. In addition to all this, there will also be exhibitions and markets at different locations throughout the city.
As is tradition, the Fires de Sant Narcís will end on Sunday 1 November with a spectacular fireworks display at 20:00 in Parc de les Ribes del Ter, which can be seen from different points around the town.
As usual, a wide variety of fair stalls and attractions will be installed in Devesa Park, including one of the tallest Ferris wheels in Europe. On Monday 26 October from 17:00 to 20:00, Fires en silenci will take place, with attractions adapted acoustically and in terms of lighting for children with sensory sensitivities or other specific needs.
The concerts during the Sant Narcís festivities in Girona will take place from 23 October to 1 November at different venues, mainly the La Copa area, Parc del Migdia and Envelat.
The La Copa area will feature 8 days of musical programming, with established groups from the national music scene and emerging acts.
The La Copa programme begins on Friday 23 October at 22:30 with Miki Núñez, Banda Neón and Dj Tramma. On Saturday 24 at 22:30, it will be the turn of Emé, Queralt Lahoz and Serena, while on Sunday 25 at 18:00 Romantic Dimoni, BigBlack Rhino and The Salsa Punk Orkestra will perform.
The second week of concerts at La Copa will begin on Wednesday 28 October at 22:30 with Carmen 113, León Benavente and Ypnosi. On Thursday 29 at 22:30, Teràpia de Shock, Els Amics de les Arts and El Diluvi will perform. On Friday 30, at the same time, it will be the turn of Bull Brigade, Non Servium and CRIM.
On Saturday 31 October at 22:30, Dj Calvins, 31 FAM and Malifeta will take to the stage. Finally, on Sunday 1 November at 17:30, Orquestra Maribel will close the concert programme at La Copa.
In addition to the La Copa area, Parc del Migdia will host parallel musical performances. On Saturday 24 October at 18:30, Kenny Larkin, Enai, Ariza and Bass Ball will perform. On Sunday 25 at 17:00, it will be the turn of Catalunya Freestyle. On Wednesday 28 at 19:30, Joan Miquel Oliver and Mazoni will perform, while on Thursday 29 at 19:30 it will be the turn of Los Comino and Eli Rodriguez.
On Friday 30 October at 19:30, Durruti t'estimo and El Petit de Cal Eril will perform. Finally, on Saturday 31 at 19:30, Genni Knows and Natxo Tarrés & the Wireless will close the musical programme at Parc del Migdia.
A total of 19 organisations will have a bar at the La Copa area selling sandwiches and drinks. This year, they will be open for 8 days.
On the first two days, Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, the bars can operate until 5:00 in the morning. On Sunday 25 October, they must close at 3:00 in the morning.
On Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October, the bars will remain closed. From Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October, they will be open until 5:00 in the morning. Finally, on Sunday 1 November, they must close at midnight.
Parc del Migdia will also have a bar serving food and drinks during the concerts.
All bars will be managed by a non-profit civic, cultural or sports organisation, association or group from the city of Girona.
