Temps de Flors: the outbreak of spring in Girona

From May 10 to 18, the city of Girona becomes a large garden with the 70th edition of Temps de Flors, an exhibition of flowers and plants in patios, gardens, buildings, and emblematic monuments of the city of Girona that gives away every year unrepeatable images.

The exhibition has been held since 1954 during the month of May in the city of Girona and is organized by the associations Amics de la Girona Antiga and Amics de les Flors de Girona with the collaboration of the Girona City Council.

In 2013, Traveler National Geographic magazine chose Girona as “one of the world's destinations to travel in spring”, positioning this exhibition internationally. Over time, Temps de Flors has gained popularity and has become a mass phenomenon that attracts visitors from all over the world, attracting more than 350,000 people in less than two weeks.

Key places to visit

During these nine days, flowers and plants are the main protagonists. You can visit more than one hundred spaces distributed in thirteen neighbourhoods of the city: Barri Vell, Can Gibert del Pla, Carme, la Devesa, l'Eixample, Les Pedreres, Mercadal, Montilivi, Palau-sacosta, Santa Eugènia, Sant Narcís, Taialà and the Vall de Sant Daniel.

Some of the key places are the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the church of Sant Feliu, the chapel of Sant Nicolau, the Plaça dels Jurats, the church of Sant Martí Sacosta, the church of Sant Lluc, the Arab Baths, the Casal de les Sarraïnes, the Gironella Tower and the Alemanys Garden and the Lleó Avinay House.

One of the most anticipated moments of this event is the inauguration of the carpet that covers the steps of the Cathedral. Other highly sought-after floral decorations are those of the Town Hall, the Arab Baths, the Call Jueu and the medieval passageways and patios of the Barri Vell.

A varied cultural agenda is organized around the exhibition with concerts, exhibitions, and guided tours of historical sites, which help to complement the visit.

In addition, different contests are also held, such as a window dressing and interior decoration contest, a photography contest on Instagram or a short film contest with mobile devices.

Recommendations

The influx of visitors of Temps de Flors is especially high during weekends, so it is advisable, whenever possible, to visit during the week. Visiting hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on Saturdays, May 10 and 17, until midnight, with early morning and noon being the least crowded times of the day.

We recommend using public transportation to get there or get around the city. If you come to Girona by private car, we recommend parking it in the parking lots on the outskirts of the city to avoid traffic jams.

The tour of all the floral spaces is done on foot, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. To facilitate access, visits, and security, the Barri Vell will be closed on the perimeter with different entry and exit points.
