Illes Medes: the most emblematic archipelago of the Costa Brava

Illes Medes: the most emblematic archipelago of the Costa Brava

20.05.2026 Nature

The Illes Medes are one of the most emblematic archipelagos in the Mediterranean and a must-visit destination for nature lovers visiting the Costa Brava. This small group of seven islands, located off the coast of L'Estartit, stands out for its ecological value and scenic beauty. Discover this protected natural space in the heart of Baix Empordà, in Girona.

Montgrí, Illes Medes and Baix Ter Natural Park

The Montgrí, Illes Medes and Baix Ter Natural Park was officially established in 2010 to unify the protection of this territory, which spans the municipalities of L'Estartit (Torroella de Montgrí), L'Escala, and Pals. This protected area covers more than 8,000 hectares, of which over 2,000 are strictly marine, protecting both the coastline and the wetlands at the mouth of the Ter River.

The Illes Medes are the crown jewel of this environment: an archipelago of 21.5 hectares consisting of seven main islets, among which the Meda Gran, the Meda Xica, and the imposing Cavall Bernat stand out. Geologically, these islands represent a natural extension of the Montgrí Massif that stretches into the sea, creating a landscape of limestone cliffs that drop vertically to depths of 50 meters.

The environmental richness of this setting is due to a unique productive phenomenon. The proximity of the mouth of the Ter River and the influence of northern currents favor the upwelling of nutrient-rich deep waters, making the seabed of the islands a world-renowned reference in terms of biology and biodiversity. This ecological importance has been internationally recognized through the inclusion of the archipelago in the list of Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI).

A privileged ecosystem between the sky and the sea

The diversity of habitats in the Illes Medes allows for the coexistence of very varied species. On the surface of the islets, declared an Integral Natural Reserve with restricted access to guarantee its conservation, the landscape is dominated by halophilic shrubs adapted to salinity and sparse tree layers of wild olive and mastic. This terrestrial environment is a crucial refuge for birds, as it hosts one of the largest colonies of yellow-legged gulls in the Mediterranean, along with populations of European shags and cattle egrets that nest on its cliffs.

Below the surface of the islets, the underwater landscape is breathtaking. The Posidonia oceanica meadows to the west of the islands are among the best-preserved on the Catalan coast, acting as the lungs of the sea and a nursery for multiple species. In the deeper and shadier areas, the coralligenous environment thrives, where red gorgonians and red coral carpet the rocks, while communities of sponges and crustaceans inhabit the numerous caves and tunnels carved by marine erosion. Furthermore, the absence of fishing has allowed species such as the dusky grouper or the gilt-head bream to reach impressive sizes and show an astonishing comfort around visitors.

Activities and routes in the marine environment

The Illes Medes are a perfect destination to enjoy the sea in an active and respectful way. The star activity is scuba diving, as its depths offer dives for all levels, from beginners to expert divers. Some of the best-known areas are Vaca, Dofí Nord, Dofí Sud, Cavall Bernat, Salpatxot or Ferranelles.

If you prefer a simpler experience, guided snorkeling allows you to discover part of the underwater wealth without the need for a deep dive. Glass-bottom boat excursions are also highly recommended, an ideal option for families with children.

The surroundings can also be explored by kayak, paddle surf, or through boat tours along the Montgrí coast. Although landing freely on the islands is not permitted, the coastal viewpoints offer spectacular views of the archipelago, especially from points such as Cap de la Barra or the coastal paths (camins de ronda) of L'Estartit.

Heritage, history and curiosities of the Illes Medes

The Illes Medes stand out not only for their natural value but also for being a key witness to the history of the Costa Brava. Due to its strategic location, between the 16th and 19th centuries, the archipelago was a lookout point and, above all, the main refuge for pirates and corsairs linked to the Ottoman Empire. From these islands, crews planned attacks against coastal towns.

This turbulent past transformed the local landscape: to defend themselves, the population built a network of watchtowers (such as the Torre Moratxa) and fortified farmhouses (masies) that are still preserved today. On the Meda Gran, the largest island, there are still remains of military fortifications that demonstrate its strategic importance until the Peninsular War in the 19th century.

Another of the most recognizable elements is the Meda Gran lighthouse, inaugurated in 1868. Although it was originally inhabited, it was one of the first in Spain to be automated at the beginning of the 20th century. It is important to remember that, to protect the ecosystem, landing on the islands is currently restricted, therefore, the lighthouse and the historical ruins can only be observed from the sea.

To complete the experience, it is worth visiting Espai Medes, the Interpretation Center of the Montgrí, Illes Medes and Baix Ter Natural Park, located in the port of L’Estartit. Additionally, every September the town celebrates the Pirates and Corsairs Fair, where the history of the archipelago comes to life through cultural activities and theatrical reenactments.
